  • Toilets: 10-15 years
  • Sinks:
  • Stainless Steel: 15-30 years
  • Porcelain: 25-30 years
  • Bathtubs:
  • Fiberglass: 5-10 years
  • Acrylic: 10-15 years
  • Porcelain or Cast Iron: 50+ years

Plumbing Fixtures: Repair or Replace

Aside from expense and convenience, reducing waste is essential when repairing items. We suggest repairing the fixtures if they meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • The problem is minor and straightforward to fix. Replacing a worn washer in a faucet or a flapper in a toilet is inexpensive and can be done quickly.
  • Repairing a fixture that is a couple of years old is likely to cost less than replacement.
  • Fixtures that are custom and high-end are almost always less expensive to repair.

Unfortunately, sometimes replacement is your only option. If you’re unsure whether you should replace a fixture, ask yourself these questions:

  • Does the plumbing fixture need frequent repairs? The cost of minor repairs adds up over time.
  • How old is your fixture? As plumbing fixtures approach the end of their average lifespan, they become inefficient, which increases your water usage.
  • Is there visible damage? The fixture will soon fail if you see corrosion, mineral buildup, or rust.

Selecting Quality Plumbing Fixtures

Choose solid metals that resist corrosion, like brass, bronze, or stainless steel, and avoid fixtures with any plastic parts. Purchase plumbing fixtures from reputable brands that offer strong warranties;we can offer suggestions if you’re unsure. Check the gallons per minute (GPM) and gallons per flush (GPF) to find the most efficient fixtures. The lower the GPM or GPF, the more efficient it is.

Average Plumbing Fixture Installation Times

  • Faucets: Kitchen and bathroom faucets have one of the fastest installation times, at 1-2 hours. We turn off the water, remove the existing fixture, and replace it with the new fixture. Upgrading features, such as adding sensors or pull-down sprayers, will take longer.
  • Sinks: Most sinks take between 2 and 4 hours to install. The type of sink, drop-in or undermount, and whether your plumbing needs repair will affect the time needed. Undermount sinks require precise alignment and sealing, which adds to their installation time.
  • Toilets: A straightforward toilet installation takes about the same time as a faucet—1-2 hours. The plumber will turn off the water, remove the old toilet, and install the new one, which includes sealing to prevent water and grime from getting underneath it. Sealing a toilet also adds stability and is often necessary for code compliance.
  • Water Heaters: Whether you have a standard tank or tankless style, water heaters generally require 3-5 hours to install. Replacing a tank water heater requires draining the tank before removal, then connecting the new unit to the pipes and gas or electric lines for power. It will take longer to install if a tankless water heater needs new vent pipes or gas lines.
  • Showers and Bathtubs: At 4-8 hours, showers and bathtubs require the most time for installation. If you’re swapping out a basic tub or shower for a similar one, the time will be at the low end of the range. Upgrading a shower to include multiple waterheads or converting a bathtub to a standing shower will take considerably longer.
